Proactive Defense: Why Community Readiness through Intelligent-driven Surveillance is a formidable Preventive Measure against Ebola Outbreak

By: Prof. A.S. Sodiya and the AIA4OneHealth Research Team

The recent news regarding a potential Ebola virus outbreak serves as a complete reminder of the ever present threat of infectious diseases in our region. In a commendable and proactive step, the Nigerian government has officially allocated preparedness funds to strengthen our national response capabilities. However, government readiness is only one part of the situation and for us to strengthen our defenses, we must actively combine grassroots awareness and community sensitisation with government efforts.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a severe, often fatal illness that is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, or organs of infected animals, eventually spreading through human-to-human transmission. This disease moves quickly, early detection is the absolute foundation of effective outbreak management. Symptoms typically appear between 2 to 21 days after contact with the virus and manifest as a sudden onset of high fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, and a severe sore throat. This is often followed by vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney function, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

Preventing the spread of Ebola requires strict, collective compliance with hygiene and safety protocols. Individuals must practice rigorous hand hygiene using soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizers. It is critical to avoid any contact with the bodily fluids of individuals exhibiting any of the symptoms. Anyone exhibiting symptoms must not practice self medication, they must be isolated immediately while local health authorities or designated Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs) are contacted.

Additionally, outbreaks are contained not merely by treating the sick, but by breaking the chain of transmission as rapidly as possible before a suspected incident becomes an epidemic. This is where intelligent disease surveillance and early warning systems become indispensable. As a research team dedicated to developing AI-driven, community-sensitive disease surveillance systems, operating within a One Health framework, we recognize that a rapid response is only possible when information flows seamlessly from the community to the designated healthcare facility. Reporting anomalies and suspected cases immediately, will allow us to identify transmission risk factors before they escalate. Community informants and local health centers provide the vital data and information needed for predictive analytics.

Preparedness remains a collective responsibility. We urge Nigerians to stay informed through official channels such as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and State Ministries of Health. We must leverage our community networks not to spread panic, but to share accurate information, maintain uncompromising hygiene standards, and remain vigilant.

It’s our collective responsibility and through informed communities intelligent and real-time surveillance, we can build a strong defence and be prepared against Ebola and other infectious disease outbreaks.
