FUNAAB to Launch AI-Driven Infectious Disease Research Projects

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), through the Artificial Intelligence Applications for One Health (AIA4OneHealth) research group in the Department of Computer Science, is set to officially launch two pioneering research projects aimed at combating infectious diseases with the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The projects, which recently attracted international research grants from the Artificial Intelligence for Pandemic and Epidemic Preparedness (AI4PEP) Network based at the University of Toronto, Canada, were being funded by the International Development Research Council (IDRC) and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Focused on strengthening existing surveillance and management platforms such as SORMAS and TATAFO, the research would commence with Ogun State as the pilot study area, with prospects for national expansion as additional funding becomes available.

The official launch has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at 12 noon in the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE) Conference Room of the University. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, would serve as the Chief Host, while the event would be chaired by eminent stakeholders in the health sector. The launch would also provide a platform for strategic engagements between AIA4OneHealth, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Ogun State Ministry of Health, and other critical partners.

Led by the Team Leader, Prof. Adesina Sodiya, the initiative reaffirms FUNAAB’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research and deploying innovative, AI-driven solutions to address pressing global health challenges.
